Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 1 loaf Brioche or French bread, cut into thick slices
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Sugar for caramelizing on top
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Arrange the bread slices in the baking dish, overlapping them slightly.
  • Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring all slices are soaked.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.

Baking

  • Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set.
  • Remove from the oven and sprinkle a thin layer of sugar on top.
  • Using a kitchen torch, caramelize the sugar until it forms a crispy, golden crust.
  • Allow to cool slightly, then serve warm.

Notes

For best flavor, allow the dish to soak overnight. Feel free to use brown sugar instead of granulated for a richer taste. Don't skip the caramelization for that signature crunchy topping.
