  • 4 pieces chicken breasts Skin-on for extra crunch (optional)
  • 1 cup buttermilk Can substitute with milk and lemon juice or vinegar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Oil for frying Canola, peanut, or vegetable oil recommended
  • Gravy (optional) For serving
  • Mashed potatoes (optional) For serving
  • Green beans (optional) For serving

Preparation

  • Marinate the chicken breasts in buttermilk for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight for better results.
  • In a bowl, mix together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Remove chicken from buttermilk, letting excess drip off, and dredge in the flour mixture.
  • Fry the chicken in hot oil until golden brown and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes per side.

Serving

  • Serve with optional gravy, mashed potatoes, and green beans.

Notes

For extra crunch, double-dip the dredged chicken back into the buttermilk and then into the flour again before frying. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
