Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 small oranges or tangelos (about 18–20 slices)
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 cups water

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice your oranges into ¼-inch rounds using a sharp knife or a mandoline.
  • In a saucepan, combine sugar and water, heating until sugar dissolves and the syrup boils.
  • Reduce heat to a gentle simmer. Add the orange slices in a single layer. Simmer for 45–60 minutes, turning occasionally, until the peel is translucent.
  • Remove slices with tongs and arrange them on a wire rack. Let them dry uncovered at room temperature for 24–48 hours until they're tacky but set.
  • Optional: Roll in sugar for that frosted finish, or dip in melted chocolate and sprinkle with flaky salt.

Notes

Cutting evenly is key for uniform cooking. If you're short on time, simmer for a shorter period for a firmer texture but let those flavors marinate longer if you can. Don’t skip the drying stage as it ensures they have the right chewy texture. For more sweetness, add more sugar when rolling. Feeling adventurous? Try mixing in spices like cinnamon for a flavor twist.
